Remembering

He had done the painting of their new home soon after they married. It was to be her birthday gift; a gift that would acquire more importance as their time together stretched into the future, strengthening bonds.
She adored it, hung it in pride of place over the mantel. A day never passed without her smiling as she glanced towards the familiar image and remembered...

Now, she remembers when he was alive, and as shadows dim sunlight, so her face loses all brightness as the first tear falls.

For Mag 139, thanks to Tess and Curtis Wilson Cost who painted the original image.

  1. Wow, unexpected ending. I first looked at the paining (by now I am finally expecting your wonderful artwork - rework, and thought within this example there are no dangers. Loved the story.

  2. Jinksy, you tell a good story. May I suggest, everything in the story leads to her seeing the painting in pride of place so many times. You do not need the word "first" because it probably isn't the first tear and if "first today" then you should say so.

    1. Very valid point, Christopher, thanks, but I've chosen to change their 'first' home to their 'new' home, thereby leaving it to the reader to choose how they interpret the ending - first tear, or first today. Actually, I think that is where the whole story leads, doesn't it?

  23. Nice theme, Jinksy, but really sad. That is the way I feel about my dog, Adi, when I see her pictures on my blog and elsewhere. She died a month ago. Today I threw the cover to her mattress away for the garbage man to pick up. I almost retrieved it before the garbage truck took it away.
Adi was a very good dog (link), the best.

  25. Perhaps her tear will fall to flood a planet , wrap it in ocean , and after milliions of years of evolution , oerhaps life will emerge from these salty deeps. !

  31. aloha Jinksy - you've pointed out how the significance of a work can change emotionally over time for the viewer. in this case of course it is and emotional appreciation. i think it maybe able to change in other ways too. i have paintings that have changed for me in this way - emotionally, over time. i can appreciate them esthetically on one level - but the emotional appreciation has an equal if not higher value to me because of the emotional connection. i find this intriguing to think about. cool. thank you. aloha.
