Within us all lie shadow beings, waiting
to make their presence felt; to bend the truth
until our conscious mind is set in turmoil
by unaccustomed promptings of temptation.
We feel the warmth of all their whispered goads
which hold us, teetering on the brink of wisdom,
and ready to misread a situation;
to falter in our stride and lose the way...
It's then we have to choose to take control,
to push our finer instincts to the fore
by ignoring what might be the easy option,
and strive, however hard, to do what's right,
with no regret, no thought of recompense
except a well earned sense of justice done.
Thanks to Tess and a surreal picture by René Magritte, this is my adapted offering for The Mag 161 and linked to Toads Open Link Monday, on Tuesday! LOL
Text and image, both quite powerful...
ReplyDeleteYup self control, but also letting go of results!
ReplyDeleteEndless internal struggle, our good self vs. our evil self. Nicely penned.
ReplyDeleteTo strive to work and do right, is justice done ~ I do wonder how many of us fall away when money is involved ~
ReplyDeletewell spoken words.
ReplyDeleteYes...love the altered pic...fabulous

The contant pull and pull of temptation and conscience. Well put.
ReplyDeleteWonderful take on the straight and narrow path. Your picture makes me think of emotion making colours in the aura. Tigerbrite
ReplyDeleteMe too! :)
DeleteGreat adaptation of the art...What lies below, and then "to push our finer instincts"...a real winner.
ReplyDeleteyes indeed- we all have those imps on our shoulder whispering in our ear.....
ReplyDeleteBeautiful poetry, Penny. Fits beautifully with the image you created.
ReplyDelete'Tis a battle indeed!
ReplyDeleteWell written!
ReplyDeleteYes,and those shadowy whispers can become screeching voices, should need arise. Otherwise how to we reconcile conflicting drivers of the lover-poet with the screaming bayonet charger?
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness- a lovely read, but I almost forgot to read your photo is so intense! I really like the action of the book how it pulls it so forward, as in the original photo it takes on reality! Bravo!!!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful! And I love what you did with the art, too.
ReplyDelete=)
agreed.and these things are quite difficult to manage.
ReplyDeleteShadow beings... one must recognize and understand them in order to manage them, no?
ReplyDelete... yes, and it is a lesson not easily learned. Well said, Jinksy!
ReplyDeleteVery well done, Jinksy, I especially know how this is:
ReplyDelete"to bend the truth
until our conscious mind is set in turmoil"
and how difficult this is:
"to push our finer instincts to the fore"
but you're right, it must be done, else the shadow beings will haunt us evermore.

The poem and art go well together. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the wisdom , Jinksy , Carl Jung would be proud !
ReplyDeleteAnd how satisying it feels to know one has done the right thing. That second head has to go though!
ReplyDeleteToo live life a shadow of your true self leads to all kinds of trouble. It feels much better to be yourself, be honest and reflect upon ones self in a good way! This was so wonderful to read Jinksy, wonderfully woven words!
