The Eyes Have It

The eye of the camera sees only those things chosen by the photographer. Its iris opens and closes on demand with predetermined speed and aperture, to capture upside down shapes on its retina. The human eyes and brain behind the lens use imagination to produce the completed picture; they have final control of the image.

These 55 words were written for One Stop Poetry who have today featured the work of photographer India Hobson.

  3. Amazing our human visual process. In addition to being a wonderful artistic tool, I think the camera is also a great metaphor for it. Makes me think of sensory disorders and how everything processes things differently, sighted or blind. Excellent 55.

  6. Yes, indeed, everything comes to us through the senses, and through our own lens. Sometimes, just as upside down as the camera's. Well said.

  7. I always thought it was the other way around, that the camera sees only what the photographer WANTS it to.

  9. That is why beauty is sometimes captured amongst a tragedy. I'm thinking of the horror captured on film of the Japan tragedy - some of the images are breathtaking...

  13. Yes,we have final control, in a manner of speaking, of the images we see, but one questions whether we have control over the filters that censor them. This is a profound observation in your 55 words.
